Mind-blowing Digital 3D Printing of Super-Green Houses!!
Digital 3d Printing | 3d Digital Printing | Facit Homes | 3d Homes| 3d Domains
Four years ago I wrote about what I called the holy grail of CAD-CAM, where a building is not only drawn in a computer but goes the next step, to Computer Aided Manufacturing. I showed a prototype, the Digital House 1.1 and was impressed, writing:

Imagine ordering a custom house and having it delivered in a box, opening it and connecting lightweight, manageable pieces without a crane, living in a house where the framing is furniture quality and you don't even want to cover it with drywall. This is truly the future.

Well, it's not the future, it is happening right now, and you're looking at it.

There’s a lot of discussion these days about the viability of 3D and what the future holds for it.

Is it a gimmick? A trend? Or is it the next great frontier in movie making?

As someone in the business of 3D, I’d like to share some thoughts on why I think it’s here to stay, and in a big way.

3D printers: Almost mainstream
3d Printing | 3d Printer Kit | 3d Printer | Additive Manufacturing | 3d Object | 3d Domains
Creating three-dimensional objects on a printer is still complicated, but it's getting easier.

As a 3D printer begins fabricating an object, each layer gets fused or glued to the previous one and the product gradually gets built up. Under the hood, 3D printers use a variety of different fabrication techniques, several of which are based on ink-jet technology, and can use many different types of "build" materials to print three-dimensional objects.

Before buying a 3D printer, Smith would send its designs to a service bureau for fabrication, and parts took three or four days to turn around. Had Smith used a service bureau for the WallRover project -- which went through 22 design iterations -- it would have taken six months to complete, Smith says.

Instead, Smith was able to get a final design and fully functional prototype to the client within two weeks.

And he did it using a consumer-grade 3D "plastic jet printer" that he built from a kit...

Minority Report tech: 3D interaction in thin air
3d Technology | Fog Screen | Displair | 3d Interaction | Gesture Interface | 3d Domains | Gesture Domains
The next logical step in the development of 3D technology is to produce a userface where the consumer can play and manipulate 3D objects, just like Minority Report, allowing the the user to drag, swipe, and interact with the images in front of him. Sounds a little far fetched? Well it isn’t light years away as Russian company DisplAir have drawn first blood in the race to develop 3D tech with the first working prototype of a multi-touch 3D userface.

Previously on Humans Invent we brought you Aerial 3D, a technology that uses lasers to project images onto the air in front of you, creating moving shapes that are really three dimensional. The powerful lasers are focused onto points in the air, which superheats the air to create plasma, which emits light so that we can see it in front of us, meaning no more screens. But DisplAir have moved the idea forward one step, by developing a 3D userface prototype that you can interact with – it is quite simply the closest technology to the gesture interface used by Tom Cruise in Minority Report.

Sensio tries new slant on 3D TV
3d TV | Sensio | 3d Compression | Live 3d Events | 3d Broadcasts | 3d Movies | 3d Domains
Last year at this time, Sensio Technologies CEO Nicholas Routhier said he was confident several television manufacturers would be using his company's technology.

At the company's annual general meeting Thursday, Routhier admitted his predictions last year were optimistic, and that it has taken longer than expected for Sensio to become the 3D compression software of choice for television manufacturers. Currently, only one company - Vizio, based in the U.S. - uses Sensio. The others use an open-source and free software to bring 3D images to the screen.

"We're fighting free," Routhier said. "It's very difficult to beat free."

However, Routhier said he believes television manufacturers will soon recognize the value in paying for Sensio's proprietary software, because it delivers better quality images, and the company is set to launch an extensive library of 3D movies, sports events and concerts in the next few months. He said by the end of next year, that library will have 100 titles, which could be streamed to televisions through an Internet connection.

3ality Technica pushing forward into 2012
3d Production | 3ality | Element Technica | 3d Content | 3d Broadcasts | 3d Domain Names
A handful of months since 3ality acquired Element Technica, the newly merged company is rapidly approaching full integration and is pushing ahead with some of its most important products to date: namely software that could dramatically reduce the cost of 3D production.

“It’s going well,” says the company’s Steve Schklair of the process of taking the company’s two product lines and meshing them together. “We’re almost fully integrated and we’ve spent a lot of time integrating the existing the rig lines with the software and electronic controls, and that’s worked extremely well. Where there are are two products that have a lot of similarities, we’re combining the best pieces out of both. That’s not so much been applied to things that are already in the market, but things that were on the drawing board or nearing completion.”

Schklair states that the market is always looking for better price points, and the company is now able to offer better bundle packages to those interested in taking up the 3D mantle. Also, and you get the sense that this is where a lot of the focus has been on the R&D side recently, it’s been pushing aggressively ahead with its software development.

Managing director of Sony Gulf FZE, Osamu Miura, has confirmed Sony's plans to launch OLED, glasses-free 3D and 4K TV ranges 'in the next three to four years'.

In fact, Osamu Miura had one or two very interesting things to say in a recent interview with the Gulf Times.

Glasses-Free 3D: Not Quite Ready
Sony seems to be looking towards glasses-free technology for its future 3D TV ranges. However, unlike some other, more hasty manufacturers, the firm is still not ready to roll out the technology onto the market. 'We already have the technology for glasses-free 3D TVs and a competitor has launched a product,' said Mr Miura, clearly referring to the Toshiba ZL2, presented at the IFA tech show (here we are trying it out) and due to launch before the end of the year. He continued: 'the technology is being used in our 3D Handycam, but it is a very small LCD, if you want to enjoy it on a big screen, it takes time. The current technology cannot satisfy the demand of people, so we are developing it further.'

Printrbot: an all-in-one 3D printer kit for $499
3d Printing | 3d Printing Kit | PrintrBot | 3d Printer | All In One 3d | 3d Domain Names
3D printing is gaining in popularity and brings with it the promise of making your own physical stuff at home out of plastic. The problem is, it’s still quite expensive to get your own 3D printer at home, and constructing one from a kit can be quite complex and time consuming.

Examples of 3D printers already available to purchase and build include the Makerbot ($1,299), the Ultimaker ($1,600), and the Pruse Mendel ($825). As you can see, none of those are exactly very cheap to acquire.

Brook Drumm aims to change that with a new Kickstarter project for his 3D printer called the Printrbot. The project managed to collect 100% of the funding he required in just 46 hours, and there’s still plenty of time before the December 17 deadline to pledge some money and secure yourself one of these home 3D printer kits.

How did 3D fare at the 'WLECM'?
3d News | 3d Technology | 3d Content | LIVE 3d Events | 3d Broadcasting | SKY 3d | 3d Domain Names
Now let's look at the positive signals that came from Cannes this year!

Most of the first day of the conference was dedicated to 3D, with many great panels and speakers. With the exception of a short "sushi in 3D" demo reel, the promos that were screened were simply breathtaking. There is no doubt, that the filmmakers are learning quickly how to make use of the third dimension. I am seeing more and more sophisticated productions that include high-speed cameras, airborne drones, underwater footage, and a lot of creativity. The latest four films that we signed on for global distribution are of outstanding quality and the bar is being raised constantly by our buyers, too.

Another emerging market is live 3D events that are drawing large crowds to movie theatres near you (usually off peak and at premium prices). Typically these events are sports or music/performance related, and it is great to see that we now have the technology to bring these events to many thousands of theatres in real-time at reasonable cost.

Case in point: the Norma Kamali Spring 2012 collection, which was shown on dancing, smiling models via a 3D film, rather than through a traditional lookbook or runway show, the latter of which she hasn't done in years. Norma said that she was inspired to use the technology after watching the documentary Cave of Forgotten Dreams. She told me that, "it's a great documentary, but it's a documentary and it's dry. However, from the minute the film opened, because it's done in 3D, I was captivated by the details that just popped off of the screen and really it was just ordinary clothes and places." Though 3D is something others in the fashion business have definitely started to embrace in the last couple of years, Norma clarified that what they did was something different, "I know Burberry's had their shows videotaped in 3D, but ours was a little unique because of the way we filmed and edited it." She continued, "we used two cameras, we edited each camera to a different kind of depth and so sometimes there were three or four layers and each layer was 3D." Norma was also quick to point out that, "the real innovative part of the whole thing are the shopping pages that are in 3D, that's where we really wanted to try out something new and different."

The Future Of 3D Printing
3d Printing | Rapid Prototyping | 3d Modeling | 3d Printers | 3d Printing Domains
We’re very interested in the developments of 3D printing and the possible impact of this revolution on the city, urbanism and architecture. Joris van Tubergen is lab manager at ProtoSpace FabLab in Utrecht and founder of Euro Per Minute Design. We dropped him some questions about the future of 3D printing and architecture.

What should people know about 3D printing?
“3D printing is a technique to make products, parts, things, whatever. 3D printing is not a goal, there are more techniques to make things. What is important that the technique should be digital. By using digital fabrication techniques it is easy to reproduce things over and over again and also make every product exact slightly different. By using digital techniques it is also possible to send products over the world by email instead of sending the products in a container.

Three-dimensional television is growing at a slower than expected pace, but industry experts remain optimistic that it will reshape the way the world watches the small screen.

The number of 3D TV channels will break the 100-channel barrier by 2014, according to market research group In-Stat, with sports, the arts, big music events and movies set to spearhead growth.

"When we said three years ago that 3D would be a success, people criticized us," said Vincent Teulade, a Paris-based technology and media consultant at PriceWaterhouseCoopers, at the MIPTV trade show that ended Thursday.

"But 3D has arrived and it is known by the mass market."

When Will the NFL Broadcast in 3D?

The NFL wants to go 3D, but 3D commercials like the Monsters vs. Aliens trailer that will air during the game on Sunday are not showing off the latest technology. Some experts worry that this could give the wrong impression of 3D technology to millions of home viewers who are not aware of 3D tech's recent advances, especially when it comes to big screen films. And though problems remain, 3D football at home is closer to reality than ever before.
