Maybe it’s time to ditch your keys, wallets, debit cards and passports as the smartphone revolutions gathers momentum.

Wallet? Check. Keys? Check. Mobile? Check. For most people, it is a ritual list to tick off whenever they leave home. But the world’s biggest mobile and web businesses are betting heavily that this long-standing trio will soon be distilled to a single item.

A combination of increased security, surging smartphone usage and the advent of Near Field Communication (NFC) technology – which allows users to “swipe” mobiles as they would an Oyster Card – will soon turn the phone in your pocket into a device that gains you entry to your house, doubles as your debit card and probably your passport, your driving licence and medical records as well.

“It’s as big a moment as when we switched from cash to plastic,” says Gerry McQuade, a director at Orange and T-Mobile operator Everything Everywhere. “It’s going to change the way we shop. And if you’ve got the security for payments, why wouldn’t you have your passport on there? As soon as you get over the first hurdle, the rest will follow,” he said.

Some of the technology is already in place. Earlier this year, Orange and Barclaycard launched their NFC-enabled “Quick Tap” service for small purchases, allowing users to speed up transactions in chains such as McDonald’s and Eat.

Microsoft: Windows Phone Already Supports NFC
NFC | Near Field Communication | Microsoft | Windows Phone | NFC Domains
Have your Android friends been mocking you because your Windows Phone device doesn’t support NFC technology? Well, that’s about to end, because Microsoft has revealed today that its latest Windows Phone Mango operating does support NFC technology, it’s just manufacturers haven’t enabled it yet.

Will Coleman, developer evangelist and product manager at Microsoft UK, disclosed Windows Phone’s little secret to TechRadar today, and said it’s only a matter of time before the technology is embraced by Windows Phone vendors:

“As far as I’m aware, NFC is supported by [Windows Phone], but needs to be enabled by the OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer). So, if any OEM wants to enable it, that can be done by all means.”

“Think it’s about just about timing, in the not too distant future there are some exciting things that will be coming through with NFC from Microsoft.”

Starbucks: The Sleeping Giant in Mobile Payments
NFC | Near Field Communication | Mobile Payments | Starbucks | Galaxy Nexus | NFC Domains
Verizon fired the first shot in the battle for mobile payments by blocking Google Wallet from its new Galaxy Nexus smart phone. The initial posturing will focus on building exclusive audiences of users and by locking in payment functionality model-by-model and carrier by carrier. Similarly contenders will block out competitors in the race to reach a critical mass of mobile wallet/payments users.

Getting mobile payments to market will be a 4-way fight. The contenders will be banks and credit card co-ops (Visa & MasterCard), Online Merchants (Amazon, eBay and Google), Telecommunications carriers like Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile and handset builders (Nokia, Motorola). Each segment brings a different perspective and different set of skills, competitive advantages and perceptual baggage to the game.

Mobile payments will be data-rich and complicated. Not only will players have to move transaction data around securely, they’ll have to instantly interact with multiple networks, process and bill payments and handle tricky customer service issues.

Starbucks on the Cutting Edge of Mobile Payment Trend
NFC | Mobile Payments | Starbucks | Mobile Payment Apps | Mobile Payment Domains | NFC Domains
Starbucks has just earned itself the tag of a mobile payment processor – since January it has processed more than 26 million mobile payments. The triggers for this have been mobile apps such as Android and Apple that make payments for coffee a breeze. Interesting that Starbucks recognized the potential of apps and released its Starbucks mobile payment app – it cleaned up $110 million in money loaded onto Starbucks cards.

A likely new trend is emerging and it could be increasing consumer preference for using the mobile phone for more than just voice, music and what-have-you, junking the ubiquitous wallet.

12 Crucial Consumer Trends For 2012

Why a cashless future is (almost) here, and why it will be about convenience and an entire new eco-system of payments, rewards and offers

Sure, the cashless society has been popping-up in every trend list since 2005. And while 2012 (again) is not going to be the year that consumers en masse will forego coins and notes and just swipe their smartphones, it is going to be the year that major players like Google and MasterCard will actively roll out their cashless initiatives* around the world. For consumers, the initial lure will be convenience, but eventually mobile payments will create an entirely new data-driven eco-system of rewards, purchase history, deals and so on.

Many of these initiatives incorporate NFC (Near Field Communication), which allows for encrypted data exchange between two devices in close proximity ("near field") to each other. For instance: a reader located next to a retail cash register. Shoppers who have their credit card information stored in their NFC smartphones can pay for purchases by waving their smartphones near or tapping them on the reader, rather than using an actual credit card.

Just a few of the CASH-LESS initiatives to keep an eye on in 2012... follow this link provided

M-War: Verizon blocks Google Wallet on Galaxy Nexus
NFC | Google Wallet | Verizon | Samung Galaxy Nexus | Mobile Payment Domains | NFC Domains
Verizon wants to own your mobile identity, which may be why the company has blocked the Google Wallet mobile payments app on the forthcoming Samsung Galaxy Nexus smartphone.

Verizon is instead banking on the Isis mobile payments platform, which was jointly developed by Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile. Isis was conceived as a nationwide “mobile commerce network” to replace physical wallets with the phones people already have in their pockets.

“Verizon asked us not to include this functionality in the product,” a Google representative confirmed to VentureBeat.

Both Isis and Google Wallet use near field communications (NFC) chips that are becoming standard in many Android smartphones, including the Galaxy Nexus. Users can make purchases by simply swiping their phone over an NFC receiver at the point of sale. Both Isis and Google Wallet can be linked directly to credit card cards and gift cards to simplify the purchasing process.

Top 7 Mobile Commerce Trends in 2011
NFC | Mobile Payments | Near Field Communication | Mobile Banking | PayPal | NFC Domains
It's no secret that mobile commerce has exploded this year. People are glued to their mobile devices, period. With a shift toward mobile and tablet commerce, we anticipate that these two types of devices will continue to play an increasingly important role in the marketplace. 2011 has been a good year for mobile and tablet, and we've identified seven key trends that will continue evolving as this space widens and expands. Let's get into it.

NFC (near field communication) enables the exchange of data between devices (typically, mobile devices) that are in close proximity to each other. NFC devices are used for more than just payments, though - they can be the link between real world actions and consumer-facing or back office systems. While card issuers love NFC options, they would force payment processors to radically redesign. Are consumers ready to trade in the swipe of a credit card for the tap of an NFC-enabled device?

M-commerce trajectory steep . More consumers buy via mobile
mCommerce | Mobile Commerce | EMarketer | Mobile Payment Domains
Mobile commerce is still small compared to the overall ecommerce market, but m-commerce sales are on a steep upward trajectory, thanks in part to increasing adoption of smartphones and rising mobile internet usage, according to a new forecast by eMarketer.

EMarketer estimates mobile commerce sales will reach $6.7 billion this year in the US—a tiny fraction of overall retail sales, to be sure, but a 91.4 percent increase over 2010. Next year, sales will rise another 73.1 percent to $11.6 billion.

EMarketer's estimates of mobile sales are based on a meta-analysis of data from research firms as well as overall trends in mobile ownership and usage. M-commerce sales include sales of physical goods as well as travel and event tickets purchased via mobile, but exclude digital downloads and usage of mobile phones as a point-of-sale payment mechanism. EMarketer's estimates for m-commerce sales do not include purchases made from tablet devices.

NFC | Near Field Communication | NFC Domains
Near-field communication gained traction recently as more companies announced new programs and partnerships to enable users to make payments using mobile devices.

Companies are exploring near-field communication technology to spur mobile payments using smartphones. While mainstream adoption is still years away, several recent announcements show that the idea is gaining traction despite lingering security concerns.

Research in Motion partnered with Spanish telecommunications giant Telefonica to roll out a pilot program that would allow employees to make electronic payments and gain physical access to their workplace using their BlackBerry smartphones, RIM announced Nov. 23. Under the pilot, the 350 Telefonica employees will also get automatic account balances and transaction confirmations directly from their banks after making a payment.

The process is similar to other contactless payments in the market, such as MasterCard's PayPass, where consumers just wave their credit card in front of the reader. Startups such as Square are also rolling out services that would allow smartphones to accept payments.

Beyond the NFC hype
NFC | Near Field Communication |Visa | The Future Of NFC | NFC Domains
This has been quite the year for near field communication. The hype around the technology has skyrocketed and enabled handsets are actually being sold in the U.S. In a handful of locations, these handsets can be used for purchases and other transactions.

NFC is not a brand new technology. Millions of handsets are deployed in Japan but the hype around the technology in western countries has grown deafening. Until this year it had been all talk as handset manufacturers, telecoms and banks tried to figure out a way to make NFC a reality. But with RIM enabling two Blackberry devices, Samsung’s Nexus S and Google Wallet and Offers NFC has already become a reality to some with more slated in 2012. George Peabody, director of emerging technologies at the Mercator Advisory Group, says that much of the discussion around NFC focuses on payments but there is so much more it can do.

NFC 1.0 is what’s being discussed now and it is all about payments, Peabody says. But when NFC was first envisioned the idea of a powerful Internet connection and cloud computing on mobile devices didn’t exist.

Part of NFC 2.0 is using a device as a smart card reader, Peabody explains. Merchants could use these devices for payment acceptance, and individuals could use them to access secure Web sites.

The approach can also be used for federal government PIV applications such as logical access to a communications network. In health care, the same approach can provide strong authentication for access into medical records.

NFC 3.0 could extend the technologies role to the cloud, says Peabody. Together the two technologies could create a security-as-a-service capability with applicability for payments and other transactions. This technology could enable new payment options for retailers and consumers. “A retailer could, for example, accept an Amazon payment at the point of sale.

Tap & Donate: Are Mobile Wallets the Next Thing in Fundraising?
NFC | Near Field Communication | Mobile Wallet | Mobile Fund Raising | Commbank Kaching | NFC Domains
The latest advance in mobile technology in the form of ‘mobile wallets’ has barely touched down in Australia, but experts suggest they will dramatically transform how consumers purchase goods and services and make instant donations.

And technology experts agree - Not for Profits should be ready to alter and adapt their fundraising campaigns when the opportunity arrives. But there may be some fundraising drawbacks to the ‘tap’ or ‘wave’ to donate technology.

The Mobile Wallet or NFC (near-field communication) technology allows a consumer, usually through a mobile phone app, to tap their mobile phone or wave it in front of a computer screen to instantly pay bills, make donations or pay for other goods and services.

The Commonwealth Bank unveiled a mobile app called Commbank Kaching (that’s ‘ka-ching’ as in the sound of a cash register ringing) that is soon to be released, describing it as a world first in bringing international cutting edge technology to Australian’s palms and pockets.

The future is near: BlackBerry launches Ad campaign For NFC
NFC | Near Field Communication | RIM | Research In Motion | NFC Domains
Research in Motion is advancing its push into Near Field Communication (NFC), with the announcement of a new campaign aimed to promote the technology to Australian consumers.

NFC technology allows users to simply tap an NFC-capable device against another object that has been embedded with an NFC chip, in order to quickly access information on that chip. The system is the same as that used for Visa payWave payments and MasterCard’s PayPass – two payment methods that allow card holders to tap their card against a receiver to pay for goods, without needing to enter a pin or sign a receipt.

“NFC is an innovative technology which is enabling smartphones to become even smarter platforms,” said RIM Australia managing director, Adele Beachley.

“We believe NFC will be increasingly used in Australia in a variety of ways including making mobile payments with your smartphone, transferring information or even using your smartphone as a digital key.

“The potential of this technology excites us at RIM, driving us back to our heartland, which is innovation, and allowing us to offer new possibilities to our customers.
